Closing Stats

#1 Lovell – is now Sybil and lives in Hamilton, MA. She is at home with her sister Penny (Bumpkin) and their resident senior cat Holly.

#2 Brewster –  is now  Ms Jazzy Blue Shoes and lives in Moultonboro, NH with her resident Siamese buddy and dog brother.

#3 Bumpkin – is now Penny and lives in Hamilton, MA. She is at home with her sister Sybil (Lovell) and their resident senior cat Holly.

#4 Peddock – is now Hershey and lives in Acton, MA  She is at home with her two favorite human children and Siamese buddy Dwight (Finola's 2008 litter) as well as a family dog and a couple of big birds.

This was Grainne's first litter. They have been very different from any other litter we have raised so far. We are looking forward to seeing how these kittens grow and become adults and what influence Grainne's father's genes have on their development.

October 4th - Brewster's family came to pick her up today. Most of her belly bump has resolved. Now she only has a small solid feeling bump where her muscle wall has its sutures. She had a couple treats and played a bit before getting in top her carrier for the trip home. He owners report she slept all the way home.

September 27-29th - eleven weeks old -This weekend we said good bye to three of our kittens.  On Saturday Dr. Gould came by and picked up Peddock. She is now named Hershey. While she was here I had her check Lovell's and Brewster's incisions. She was certain Lovell's was solid but Brewster's didn't feel quite the same so we decided we will take Brewster along to see Dr. Schaefer when we take Fen in for her kitten check. No we don't think Fen's breeding took. She doesn't look pregnant but we need to make sure there isn't one hiding alone in there.

Peddock

When we saw Dr. Gould on Monday at the animal hospital she said Peddock was doing great. She was scared and hid the first day but they allowed Dwight (Finola's 2008 litter) to come in the room and she came right out to him and rubbed against him. They made fast friends. Dwight is telling her he is in charge but she is happy to be with him.

On Sunday Lovell and Bumpkin's family came to pick them up. I have an email saying they did well their first night home. This morning Lovell, now named Sybil, came out to play and sit on her owners lap a little bit. Bumpkin, now named Penny, as we expected needs a little bit more time to get comfortable in her new home but she is peeking out and comes out to eat, drink and use the litter box. :)

Monday, Today we went into see Dr. Schaefer. She spent a long time holding and feeling Brewster's tummy. She said Dr. Gould and Dr. Manley were correct. The suture is solid and the bump we see is fat. The two girls are having a reaction to the sutures. It takes 12 weeks for the suture material to fully dissolve so they will have little bumps for a few weeks to come. It will resolve and they will have pretty tummies as they grow. It clearly doesn't bother either one of them. Brewster is full of energy and plays like she always has. She and Grandma are best buddies now because momma is in heat again and quite distracted. Grandma is even allowing her to nurse sometimes. I think maybe Fen had a false pregnancy from her breeding so she is feeling very maternal right now. Brewster is scheduled to go home on Saturday.

Brewster, lol I love her crossed back feet

September 22nd-24th - On Monday the kittens all went in for their spay surgeries. Everything went well for surgery. They came home on pain medication that will last three days. They were all hyped up and wanted to run and play. We kept them in the office /kitten room to limit their activity at first. We gave them plush toys to attack. This worked well. :)  Dr. Schaefer decided to experiment on Peddock since she is going to her associate vet. She did our usual internal dissolving sutures to close the surgical site then skin glue to close the external opening on Lovell, Bumpkin and Brewster. With Peddock she did internal dissolving sutures and external sutures that will need to be removed. I don't like eternal sutures because it gives the moms and kittens something to tug at. They know it doesn't belong there. Peddock's sutures were gone by the next morning. Her incision is closed by the scab holding it.... Back to the night of surgery.... By 9 pm Brewster had a big bump sticking out the size of my thumb. It feels like jelly not hard like a swollen suture line.  :( When this happens I am always concerned that a hernia could have happened if the muscle wall lost a stitch. I can't feel a hole. In the morning Lovell now has a medium bump too and Bumpkin just a tiny bit. I think Peddock may have a little more swelling then Bumpkin but both are so minor its nothing. We head back to the animal hospital on Tuesday to see Dr. Manley. We have babies so Dr. Gould sees us too :)  It is decided I will watch Peddock closely to monitor that her incision stays closed. I don't want a staple as I think that would get pulled out too. Since its closed we will watch it. If it opens, back to the vet we will go :). Because Brewster and Lovell are the worst they both get x-rays to look at their muscle wall. It looks solid on the x-ray so the docs both think this is a reaction to the internal suture material. We have seen this before so all is well. The swelling will go away when the sutures dissolve and the body gets rid of the irritant. The kittens are not in pain they don't know they have swelling or that they even had surgery.

When traveling and while at the vet Lovell used her loud voice to protest the treatment she was receiving, lol. Bumpkin really doesn't like going to the vet so I held here while we waited for the x-rays and she seemed very calm. No shaking at all and I didn't feel her heart pounding either. I think she just gets worked up when things are new. With experience she seems more confident. I think Brewster actually enjoyed her adventure, lol. When we got home Bumpkin was very talkative telling grandma all about what happened.

September 16th - Today was first vet visit day for wellness exams and FVRCP vaccinations. The babies all did very well. All their teeth are perfect and all systems good. They were all a little bit nervous but nobody cried. They also had their blood drawn for their upcoming surgery. We weighed them all first them left them in the carrier with the top grate closed but not latched while Momma Grainne got her yearly exam and vaccinations. She did great too :) While she was on the exam table Brewster decided she wanted to be out and about. She stood on her back feet and pushed the top open with her nose and tried to pull herself out of the carrier, lol. This won her the place of fist in line to see the doctor. Dr. Schaefer picked up on something I had begun to think I was seeing in her. Her left eye seems to have a little bit of an inward tilt at times.  All the kittens got good health reports, teeth/bites were perfect. :) Poor Bumpkin was so nervous at this new experience she was buzzing. I had to hold her and stroke her until she calmed so the doctor could hear her heart properly. She has always been cautious of new things and experiences. They also had their blood drawn for their surgery next Monday. They were happy to get home and out of the carrier. Momma's nose was out of joint and she hissed at all the kittens if they came near her. Vaccines are not feel good medicine :(. Grandma was happy to step in and groom and comfort them. Today will be a day of sleep while the vaccines do their job.

Resting with Grandma Fenya

September 13th - nine weeks old - Even though we didn't plan it this way Lovell and Bumpkin seem to be paired very well together. They will go to the same home. They enjoy jumping on each other and playing chase and puff challenges. Brewster still doesn't like being the victim but her jazzy boots are always on the go so she isn't caught unaware very offten.

September 6th - Eight weeks old - This weekend the kittens enjoyed visiting with some of their families. They are never still and love to play. They are learning to leap up for moving toys. Its difficult to get a good clear photo with non-reflecting eyes because they rarely sit still. :) I can now tell them apart without color marking but color them for family visits.

September 3rd - I've been observing the kittens playing together and I think I am seeing a pecking order forming. Lovell is definitely the dominate cat in this group. She plays with toys first and the other kittens watch for their turn. Peddock is more laid back. She seems very confident with who she is and doesn't have to lead but she doesn't seem like a follower either. She shares well. Not sure I can give her a number.  Bumpkin comes in second or third. She has really gained her confidence. Brewster is really aggressive and fast. She darts in really fast and attacks. Leaps and flies. I only put her last in the pecking order because I noticed she is being picked on by the other kittens. I've seen her many times in a Halloween kitty, puffed up, stand off with another chocolate. (maybe Bumpkin?) They arch and puff and prance at each other in a circle, lol. I've also seen Lovell challenge her and Brewster runs off. She feels equal to the chocolates but not to Lovell. There are times when she seems a bit skittish. This treatment by her siblings may be where her caution has developed from? Brewster was the first to climb up to the top of the cat tree today. :)   I do think unease may go away once she is out from under the sibling influence and she becomes confident she won't be jumped on anymore. She is definitely not a meek kitten. Its a strange contrast to see in her. Peddock is talking to me more now. They all love the new toy Regina gave us at the cat show. Its a little bristle mouse on the end of a wire & wand. Its hard to get them all to have a turn with playing with it because Lovell always bites it and won't let go, then she growls. They need to get a bit more comfortable with hearing her growl, lol.

August 30th - seven weeks old -The kittens are all doing very well. They have turned into furry pinballs in the house. Ziping from one spot to another and bouncing around the room at full speed. We introduced Da Bird. They love it. The toy growl has started and the puff "I'm bigger then you" stance is seen frequently, lol. Today will be the last time we check their weight.

August 27th - The kittens are growing in confidence. They now climb up on the sofa on their own and run all over the house. They were upstairs today, lol. Brewster has turned into a lil stinker running from me every time she sees me. I think it may be a game of will ? because she is not fearful at any other time. She a smart little imp. So far she is the only one I've seen watching the television. We will have to see if the others discover it too. They are very calm when being handled. I made a video of me rubbing their toes. They are very relaxed about being touched. They are very calm about my reaching over the sofa to lift them out of the nest. Past litters kittens would dart away so I couldn't collect them, lol. They are all developing beautiful faces, each unique too.

August 23rd - six weeks old -Dr Gould (vet) dropped by with her family by to visit the kittens. The kittens made me proud and were so good about being child loved and handled. Brewster started her purr motor this week. She was purring big time, lol. Confidence in the kittens is growing. They still are a bit wary of things and noises that they are unsure of but they are learning. They are starting to play with moving toys. Bumpkin is especially keen on this new introduction. Lovell continues to be the talker. If she find herself alone she will call out to everyone. I think it's Brewster that likes to stretch her whole body out long. I keep finding her lounging like that.

August 20th - We are taking it slow with the babies being out and about. They spend the night in the kitten room for safety sake and litter use :). We open the door and allow them out in the morning. Nobody goes out fast enough for momma. She scruffs and hauls them to the nest behind the sofa. Being so young I'm not sure this is helpful? lol They are taking a bit of time to adjust to being in the open living room. It could be they are just a week too young and need more time to build their confidence. Lovell is a love...perfectly named, :) She always calls out when she realizes were in the room and comes to us. The others follow with checking us out. Brewster is crazy with energy, lol. I posted a video of her first trip up the cat furniture in the living room on facebook, its below. Peddock was with her and never made it all the way up. Brewster was up and down and all over every inch of it, lol. Brewster seems to have a calm bearing and no fear, no fear not in a crazy way. Bumpkin may turn out to be my favorite, if I could possibly have one, lol. She is so sweet, very soft, a momma girl. She tends to hang right next to momma and shadow her when she's not busy with her sisters. No personality really stands out yet. I will think based on behavior I know who a kitten is, then I check their mark and I am wrong, lol. We take them back for time in the kitten room so they continue their good litter box habits. We will continue to do this until we see them running back and forth on their own. Right now with Momma carrying them we're not seeing this happen on its own yet. Lovell is the big kitten this weigh in by a fraction and Bumpkin has caught up to Brewster in weight.

bi-weekly weigh in......

Lovell  is 1lb. 9.75 ounces = 733 grams - up 78.3  grams

Brewster is 1lb. 8.5  ounces = 698 grams - up 71 grams

Bumpkin is 1lb. 8.5 ounces = 698 grams - up 93  grams

Peddock is 1lb. 9.5 ounces = 726 grams - up 89 grams

August 16th - five weeks old - The kittens are developing ahead of the curve.  On Thursday I allowed them to find their way around the run fence and out into the hall. Peddock was eager and ran out first. She kept coming back calling to her sisters to come with but nobody else was interested. She ended up staying in the room with them. Yesterday we removed the run and all have been allowed to roam the house. Not much time was spent in the hall. Momma Grainne was out calling them to come with her into the living room. She was very eager for them to find the nest behind the sofa. They all came into the room and nobody hid. They were all interested in smelling and exploring the area.

There isn't enough room for 4 kittens to stretch out on the tree perch so one always ends up hanging off the side, lol

Or even with three, lol, and they sleep hanging like this.

Lovell - she just loves people she is frequently the first to talk to us and comes to see us.

August 13th - Nice weight gains litter box use is going very well...no accidents :) They are all using the big box  This is an athletic group. They climb well without any hesitation. They don't need a baby box, crawling over the side of the big box is no big deal, lol, so I removed the training box.

August 12th - Today is a day of progress. This morning there were two solid deposits in the litter box from kittens. One in the big box and one in the training box :) I've been placing them into the box after they eat hoping they get the idea.  I've also seen two of them using the box today. Lil Miss Bumpkin decided this morning was a good morning to eat kibble. :) She had a big meal and Peddock joined her. I've expanded the play area to include behind my desk. In a couple days when Bumkin shows she can use the litter box too we will remove the run fence. Momma doesn't like their new found independence. She keep fussing at them and scuffing them trying to corral them all together.

August 9th - four weeks old - My weigh gain calculations for the last entry were messed up. I fixed them, sorry I didn't catch it before now. 0_o

As promised photos of each kitten so we can try to start to tell them apart? lol All the chocolates were very good with their photo session but Lovell who usually is very good about posing would not stay still. I'm sure we will have more good full body photos in the near future. We have face photos today with a range of expressions, lol. They are very active running about and playing with their toys. While I'm typing Brewster  just climbed up the cat tree to the first perch, the hard way. :) Lovell loves her kibble. We have yet to see Bumpkin eat but her weigh is gaining so she is enjoying all the extra left over milk the kibble eaters are leaving for her.

August 7th - Peddock discovered how fun it is to play with toys today. This is our last daily weigh in now that three of the kittens are eating kibble. Bumpkin will soon be on to it too. Saturday we will start with their birthday weights then weigh twice a week. Daily checks are not a good indicator when they begin transitioning to solid food. The bigger trend is what we look at now. They are all outgoing and comfortable with people. They've  had a few visitors come see them and they all did great. Momma Grainne talks a lot to them when they are talking. Its cute, sort of a mumbly voice rather then a full out Siamese meow. The kittens like to talk quite a bit about what they are doing. Sometimes it bothers momma so much she scruffs them and hauls them into the nest, lol. I wonder if that is a kitty time out?

Peddock is 1lb. .5 ounces = 470 grams - up 21.4 grams

August 6th - The kittens were fussing last night when they were all trying to nurse at once so one by one I placed each one at the bowl of baby cat kibble. Lovell began eating right away and Peddock did to. Brewster and Bumpkin were not so sure what that stuff was. Today Brewster began eating the kibble too. Bumpkin was a little bit slower in maturing when it came to coming out of the nest so she will catch up soon. I have to admit that with the photos of the chocolates their faces are all so similar right now I can't tell who is who in the pictures. I try to remember then lyme disease robs me of the memory. For their birthday we will make a point of taking each kittens photo so we know who is who. Its just too hard right now with candid photos. :) Usually there is something very distinctive that helps but not with these three at this stage. I'm sorry. Well now they all look like girls, not saying they are yet, lol.  I've included photos below so you can have a guess too.

August 1st -  With how active Peddock has been running around I'm not surprised he lost a bit of weight. He probably hadn't eaten before weigh in. It's the over all trend that is important as they begin transitioning. Let's see what he does tomorrow.

afternoon weigh in......

Brewster is 13.75 ounces = 391.5 grams - up 3.6 grams

July 31st - The kittens are becoming active. I came in and found one out of the box several times now so we have moved their bed into the corner cabinet so they can walk about more freely. We've seen both Brewster and Peddock running about checking out their new area. We will add a wire run fence to help limit where they can for for a short time for their own protection. I put a short video of Peddock out and about on facebook.

July 26th - two weeks old - For their birthday everyone got a pedicure, nails trimmed. We're starting to see the blue color in the kittens eyes in nice bright natural light from the sun. Although we can see their pupils are developing they still cannot see well. Their eyes have to learn to focus and track together. At this stage kittens often look walleyed. They are getting stronger and more curious. Momma Grainne will sit just outside the box so they can work on walking around in the box. Grandma Fenya has been naughty. Twice she has tried to steal a kitten in the evening when we have the door open for the adults to get exercise around the house. She wants to relocate them into the living room. Grainne let her do it but followed with her nose right on the kitten, until Fen set the kitten down, then Grainne grabbed it up to return back to the nest, lol. We now watch Fen closely when we have adult free time.

The inside corners of Brewster's eyes are starting to peek open. Peddock's right eye is all the way open and the left is peeking open a bit. All four kittens have shed their cords.

July 12th - BIRTH DAY! - Grainne began showing signs that she would deliver the morning of the 11th but the first kitten wasn't born until after midnight so the birthday is really the 12th. At 12:15 am she presented a bubble of fluid and was having some contractions that were not close together. At 12:40 I could see the first kitten's tail and back feet inside its own sack. I waited through a three series of contractions then decided to break her water (first sack) to aid in moving delivery along. She pushed through  four more sets of contractions with no progress. Being her first litter her cervix was very tight. I decided it was in the best interest of all the kittens to help a little. I added some ky gel. Grainne wasn't happy. I used a terry cloth to grasp the kittens legs so it wouldn't slide back in after contractions. With each contraction I pulled very lightly while she pushed. Through  five more contraction sets we worked together and finally kitten one was born at 12:50am. I fully expected it not to live given the delay but its fine and strong. It was very tired and didn't cry. I rubbed and tried to get Grainne to lick its face to clear its breathing. She needed help. I place it near her head hoping she would get to work. She was slow to clean it. I had to keep picking it up to rub it and warm it. I also swung it to clear its mouth of fluid. Once it was dry and warmed it came around. We could see it breathing. I marked it with blue. Kitten two was born, quickly with no help, head first at 1:05 am. It cried right away. Momma was slow to clean it too. It was active. We marked it green. Momma worked on cleaning both babies until 1:50 am when kitten three was born, quickly with no help,  head first. We cleaned it face and rubbed it a bit then Momma began cleaning it. We marked this one red. All the kittens are crying and fussing, rooting for nipples now :) I am pretty sure I feel two more kittens to come.  Kitten four was born, quickly with no help, head first at 2:15 am. I mark it orange just in case there is a fifth. I work to help Grainne get the kitten dry and warm. She is not real attentive to this part of being a new mother. I think this new labor experience was a bit over whelming to her. We allowed her to eat two of the placentas. The first two we removed so she would concentrate her efforts on cleaning and warming the babies. She was too concerned about the placentas and ignored the babies. The two she ate I cut into manageable pieces for her. They are rich in vitamins and nutrients that will help her. Now I don't feel another kitten o_0.  I'm awake until 3:30 am with no more contractions when, alas, I fell asleep. When I woke at 7:30 am kitten five had been born. It was off in a corner separate clean and dry but cold. He probably died because he was not kept warm enough. Newborn kittens are predisposed to hypothermia because they cannot regulate their temperature and rely on the mother to keep them warm. The room temp is an un-airconditioned 85 degrees.

The Stats at birth

#1 12:50 am  blueLovell – 103.204 grams (3.625 ounces)

#2 1:05 am  greenBrewster  – 92.528 grams (3.25 ounces)

#3 1:50 am  red Bumpkin 99.645 grams (3.5 ounces)

#4 2:15 am  white Peddock  – 106.763 grams (3.75 ounces) Peddock was marked orange but we will allow that to fade and it will not be marked ie: white fur color.

#5 - after 3:30 am  seal point  – None – 99.645 grams (3.5 ounces) deceased

I have not determined sex of the kittens. Their names and my calling them him, he, her or she is not a reflection of their true sex. It can be very difficult to determine sex at this age.

Since its summer we've named the kittens after Boston Harbor Islands.

Extra weigh in today to shift time. I'm not getting up at 2 am to weigh them, lol

These are wonderful gains given its only 12 hours.

Lovell in the center looks to be seal point, Bumpkin the lightest in the center is chocolate.

I think the two outside kittens could be chocolate too but they seem to be sort of in between so they could be fooling me.

July 11th - Due date

"Rub my tummy, Meowmy"

She laid like this for more then an hour while I rubbed her tummy in the early stage of labor.

She just doesn't look at big for having five nice size kittens ready.

July 1st - Grainne went in today for her kitten count. Dr. Schafer and Dr. Manley both say 5 kittens. I can see 4 maybe 5. This time it seems easier to count spines then heads. How many do you think she has? We will find out the day they are born. She still has a couple weeks to go.

I upped the contrast on this photo but I don't think it helps much :)

May 6-8th - Grainne finally cycled into estrus and we began breeding her to Polo Tuesday night.
April 11th - Grainne is celebrating her one year birthday. When she cycles into estrus we will breed her to Polo.
