~ Kittens from this litter have all gone to their forever homes.~

  Keva's Spring Kitten Diary 2007
This diary reads from the bottom up.
The music used on this page is Let Them Be Little by Billy Dean
These kittens are the progeny of our sire Kian and dam Keva

February 11th, 2010 -  (Cherry) Tsing Tao's heart gave out last night and he was gently and lovingly euthanised. His owner, has kept a euthanasia kit near him for some time knowing this day would come. We are very sad the life of this unique and wonderful  furry personality was so short. I know he is happy to be reunited with his human pawpaw who went to heaven before him.

October 2007  - Cherry has developed very well as he has grown. He was neutered on Tuesday 11/13 and has gone to his forever home. One of the risks of being a Vet is that you can fall for your patients. Cherry has gone to live with Dr. Schaefer and her family. He will have two new big brother German Shepherds....I wonder who will end up being in charge? He is now named Tsing Tao. I corrected the closing stats to reflect his forever name and home. Tsing Tao had his echocardiogram. The results showed his defect is an idiopathic congenital defect (Tetrology of Fallot) very rare in felines. In 35 years Dr. Schaefer has never seen it. The echo specialist doctor only sees it twice. This is not something that our kitten owners need to be concerned about. Their pet kittens will not develop this condition. We retired Tsing Tao sire because of this defect.

September 1 -  The end of summer also brings an end  to this kitten diary. With full hearts and a fond look back each of the kittens in this litter has a special place in our hearts. Everyone of them a wonder. We thank them for bringing new friends into our lives and look forward to updates and birthday photos from their new owners. We like to see our babies as full grown adults. :)

Closing Stats

#1 Sky – is keeping the name Sky and lives with Lucinda in Massachusetts.

#2 Sage – is now ChaiSohn  nick named "Skeeter" he lives with Val in Massachusetts.

ChaiSohn loosely translates from Thai as "mischievous boy"

#3 Cherry – is now Tsing Tao and he lives with the Schaefer's in Massachusetts.

The name Tsing Tao comes from a costal town in China where there was a German settlement prior to WWI ...where the rare Tsing Tao Shepherd finds its origin. ;)

#4 Raven – is now  Marley and lives with Grace in Maine.

Cherry is adjusting to being the only kitten in the house. He's enjoying sneaking up on Aunty Finola and pouncing much to her dismay. He likes racing through the house until Magi gets so excited she runs with him. There are so many laps and beds to choose from he has a hard time deciding who will love on him next....if only there were a way to turn down his purr volume. He has the loudest purr I've ever heard.

August 31 - This morning Sage's new owner came to pick him up. The labor day weekend gives them some extra days to be together all day long. Here are some final diary photos I took of him this morning.

August 30 - The kittens did so well together yesterday that I allowed them to stay together for the night. I awoke to Sage growling this morning, he was playing and his toy kept getting stuck. He found the long (whip like) fleece toy in the living room and had pulled it to my bedroom with his three siblings pouncing on the opposite end all the way. They are all recovering from their surgery well. They are acting as if nothing was done to them. I have to keep reminding them they are supposed to be taking it easy. They are getting in alot of healthy healing naps. I took some photos of them in my bathroom. The big girls all go down into the tub and the kittens want to follow but have not figured out how yet.

Cherry, Whoa whats up there? Cherry, Look Sky these shell bits dangle.

I'm not sure who this is since I can't see the faces but I think its Raven and Sage.

August 29 - Everyone made it through the night with no complications. They were all very happy to be back together again this morning. Everyone got a through inspection from me and from each other, lol. They had a nice breakfast and are really doing well. The boys are back to wrestling in the sun. I have Sky on my lap right now. She really wants to go wrestle with the boys but I cannot allow her to. We are doing our best to keep them as quite as possible. If everything continues to go as well as it has been the kittens will be ready to go to their homes this weekend or next week.

Lots of resting going on today :)

August 28 - eleven weeks - Sky, Sage and Raven went in for their surgery this morning. Their procedures went well. They are home and full of energy o_0. We are working to keep them quiet and from running around or jumping. Boys tend to be less effected by their surgery but Sky in her indomitable style is not phased a bit by her surgery. I really like how Dr. Schaefer did her incision. She has a very small slit in her skin high up on her belly and it had no stitches. The doctor used surgical glue. This is really nice as kittens tend to want to pull stitches out. She does have internal dissolvable sutures holding her abdominal wall closed. They all wanted some water when they first got home and took nice little drinks. They returned several times for a few more sips of water. They had a small supper with no ill effects. Then they decided to nap at about 8 pm and are resting quietly.

Sky resting after her surgery

Resting after surgery. Sage is farthest back, Raven in the middle and Cherry front.

For the night we have Sky separated from the Sage and Raven. She has her own little litter box, nests and water. The boys are sitting outside her door. I put a nest on the floor next to the door. As I head to bed they are sitting by her door and talking softly to each other. Since Cherry was not altered yesterday,  I don't want him to be wrestling with his brothers during the night so he and his mom, Keva, will spend the night in my office as a precaution. Both Sage and Raven each came in to my bed to check on everyone. Sage was full of energy. He was attacking my feet as I moved them under the covers. Once he was confident he had killed the beast under the covers he went back to sleep by Sky's door.
As Cherry has grown his body revealed he has a defect with his heart. Sometimes no matter what we do to try to prevent it something can go wrong, it's what makes life so precious and fragile. Dr. Schaefer felt he should not be altered. Cherry will not be placed in a pet home until later. He will stay with us for now so we can monitor his progress.

August 25 & 26 - All the kittens have learned to jump up on the bed. They are beginning to nap independent of each other. Yesterday I found Sky asleep in the middle of the kitchen rug. This morning Cherry was sleeping in the middle of the living room rug surrounded by toys.

We had a couple of kitten visits this weekend and now have deposits on all the kittens in this litter.

Sky decided to come up with her own marketing plan. She crawled into Lucinda's purse and stole her heart. Sky was curled up ready to go. Sky was watching TV yesterday (animal planet). Maybe she saw some of those Hollywood girls with their pocket book dogs?

August 24, 2007 -I didn't get the photos I wanted to get today but here are some fun ones.

Dancing the Minuet?

August 23, 2007 - The kittens and I were hanging out in my office today while I tried to get some work done. The sun was shining in the window and they were lounging in nests on top of my desk. The light  gave me some nice face/eye photos....I um must have lost them. When I checked the photo file tonight they weren't there. I take photos and download them as the day goes along.  I took them at the same time I took the one below of Sage and the phone. I still can figure out how I got this one and not the others. I hope it was operator error and not my camera. I'll try again tomorrow at the same time of day. If the kittens and the sun will cooperate.

My lap was pretty busy in the morning. First Cherry wanted to sit with me, Then he saw one of the other kittens on the desk and wanted to see what was going on. Then Raven said it was his turn. He heard a ball roll across the floor and went to see where the noise came from. Then Sage asked if he could help me out. He rolled over and laid on his back in the dip between my legs. When I talked to him he would peep back to me. He was being extra sweet and I had to keep reminding myself why I can't keep him. Sky didn't lap sit but she did come by and sat on my foot. When I picked her up and placed her on my lap she started typing then walk across the desk. Which was okay with me. I don't want her ordering 10 gross of furry mice :)

August 20-22, 2007 - We are starting to see changes in the way the kittens relate to us. When kittens are young they are attached to mom and their siblings. They look to be with each other. Now they are beginning to show a desire to connect with us. Sunday night Raven was first to come up on my bed to snuggle. Monday night Cherry jumped up and hopped his way through the big girls to find a place he could curl up in next to me. This morning it was Sage who jumped up. He woke me up to pet him then came up next to the pillow and curled up to sleep. All three of them went into purr overdrive as I stroked them. They seemed to be truly happy at this new indulgence they had discovered. They are showing signs that they are getting ready to begin bonding.

August 19, 2007 - We had a busy day Saturday with visitors at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. The spacing worked out well for kitten naps. The kittens had such a fun time I think they were absolutely bored with me as their only playmate today, lol.

Sage spent some time playing with his favorite gray mouse under the office chair. He was so funny that I tried to get some photos but none of them turned out well at all. Most of the time I had a photo of his rear or back. He was hopping around too fast. Every time the mouse went away from the chair he picked it up in his mouth and brought it back under. He seemed to really enjoy hopping on the legs...their not exactly legs. The chair has a center post and star shaped support that the wheels are under. He stood on the arms of the star and batted the mouse around under it. Here he is later pouncing on a black mouse.

August 15, 2007 - Today Cherry's tummy was upset again. Poor Cherry baby, he went outside the litter box in a nest. He stepped in it with is hind foot. He got a foot wash and the floors got an extra cleaning too. Back to the vet I went.  He just needs a little bit of help getting regulated. He tested negative and is getting flagyl two times a day for a few days. He is full of energy and acting normal. Here is a nice photo of him enjoying the open window.

August 14, 2007 - nine weeks old

Sage had a funny accident today. I was watching him play around and in the new tent. I had placed a nest inside it and Sage went into a squat in the nest. I thought "Oh no your not" and tucked my hand under his behind and my thumb over the top of his tail. I thought for sure touching him this way would distract him. Nope he proceeded to pee into my hand. I was laughing and all I could think to say was "I can't believe your going in my hand". I kept a hold of his tail and picked him up nest and all and carried him into the litter box.  Nests are favored spots for toddler accidents. We always have a few when they transition to running about the house. Just like toddlers they get to playing and forget they have to run back to their litter box. I'm happy they use the nests because they can be tossed into the washer and dryer.

What's in here?

hehehe

August 13, 2007 - With everyone feeling better we switched back to Royal Canin Baby Cat food this afternoon.

Sky and Sage snuggle for an afternoon nap.

We also brought home some new houses. A big family size model and a smaller cozy model. The cozy house was the perfect cottage for Grandma Maeve and she took possession immediately while Keva and the family checked out the family home.

August 12, 2007 - Last night when I was going to give Sage some pectillin I didn't even have the dropper to his mouth when he gagged on the smell. The look on his face was so precious and I decided not to make him take it. The kittens are all playing and eating well. So far Sky has demonstrated she is back to normal. I am hoping to see similar results from the other kittens as well. Here is an example of meal time with the prescription food.

left to right - Sky, Sage, Cherry and Raven

August 11, 2007 -  Their behavior doesn't show it but from the stress of the vaccinations and strongid-t the kittens have upset digestive systems. Whenever a kitten develops diarrhea there is a concern that it could be a parasitic infection. This is especially true with larger catteries and catteries that show cats. The more cats you have in close proximity the higher the risk you will have carriers. We intentionally keep our number of cats as low as possible to help guard against this type of infection.  I called into my Vet and put the kittens on a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. I also began giving them Pet Pectillin. They are eating, drinking and playing normally. When Saturday morning arrived with no improvement I made a 7:30am trip to the Vet and had a fecal test done. The results were negative so we are not dealing with any parasites. The doctor felt it was the stress on their system from their first appointment medication. I picked up a case of Hills prescription i/d. We will continue with this diet and the pet pectillin and hope to be back to normal by Monday. I am grateful that the kittens had well established litter box habits before this started. They are being so good.

This is a favored position for kittens when tussling, kicking with the back feet into the head and face. It looks terrible but they are fine afterwards.

I know for sure this is Raven on the left. I would guess it is Sage with him because Sage is usually in the thick of the action. It could be Cherry as Cherry was growling this morning while eating when a kitten brushed passed him...Munch-Gr-munch munch-ow-munch munch-l-munch Gr-munch munch-ow-munch munch-l-munch, lol

August 8, 2007 - The kittens went in for their first Vet visit this afternoon. Keva also had her annual vaccinations. They were very well behaved, brave and quiet. Not one cried when they got their shot. Sage did do a bit of talking at the beginning of his exam...in Sage style. I expected no less.

Here are some photos of Sage at the Apple Country Animal Hospital to make up for that harsh looking photo from yesterday.

I expect tomorrow to be a quite day as they all adjust to their vaccinations. We will watch them closely for any ill effects.

August 5, 2007 - We had some company stop by this weekend. The kittens were cautious at first with all the extra feet moving about but once the activity settled down they had a good time playing. They all took a long nap after playtime.

August 4, 2007 - All the kittens are enjoying exploring and running about the house. In the safety of their known environment (the kitten room) Sage and Sky are leaders but out in this new unknown area Cherry and Raven show they are in the lead. They comfortably play out in the open while Sage and Sky dart in and out of cover to join in the play.

We still have one kitten who is forgetting to use the litter box every couple of days. So we are making sure all the kittens spend time in the kitten run between playtime explorations.

We are allowing the kittens to explore the house multiple times a day. They need time in the kitten room to use the litter pan and to eat and rest. Once they are comfortable we will allow them to come and go at will.  This time Cherry was first to make a run out to the entry hall followed by Sky. Sky took up her watch post under the desk and would pounce out at any nearby movement. Later Raven went out and made her way into the cat tree in my bedroom.

July 30, 2007 - Play time...

That's Finola on the top. Only one of the kittens has climbed to the top, Sage, and once up there he didn't know what to do. I helped him down.

Sage is showing himself to be a dominate kitten. I heard him growl once or twice when a sibling wanted to join him when he first started eating kibble. Now that he knows there is plenty for everyone he has relaxed.  He is the instigator in most of his wrestling matches. Sky keeps him in check. She holds her own and gives him a run for his money. Today I allowed them to roam out of the kitten room. Sky was first to come out and went hopping right up the stairs and back down. Then Sage followed out into the hall.

We expanded the play area today to all of my office. Their area now includes floor length drapes so we can teach them not to climb them. We just have a small area fenced that allows us to keep the doors open. The adult cats can come and go at will. As soon as Raven processes his solid food for a few days and confirms his good litter box manners we will begin exploring more of the house. All four of the kittens have decided the best bed is the tube.

Does Sky look comfortable to you?

July 21, 2007 - Finola who just had her first birthday has decided to be a surrogate mother to these kittens. I was a little leery about letting her be alone with the kittens. I thought she might play a little too hard with them. She can be enthusiastic in her play. She decided last night she had watched from her peeking corner long enough. She jumped up the 4 foot kitten run fence touched off the top and onto the cat tree in the kitten run. I shooed her out and closed the doors to the room  last night. This morning she jumped in the same way and has been snuggling with the kittens all day. Earlier she was cleaning them including their bottoms just like they were her kittens. I like that they are getting extra nurturing from Finny. She is helping them learn play limits too with their biting. It was interesting when one kitten was using the  litter box....they cry out each time they go when they are first learning....Finny got really upset that the kitten was crying and was calling and trying to get all the kittens to come with her to the nest so she could keep them safe. She talks to them just like Keva does. Right now Keva is sleeping on the floor outside the kitten run and Finola is inside talking to and washing the kittens in the nest.

July 20, 2007 - The kittens are progressing nicely. We have graduated from the training litter pan to the big cat litter box. We decided to try to entice Raven by mixing some kitten milk with baby cat kibble. He still turned his nose up at it. I even had her step into the bowl so she would lick it off her paw. I was hoping a taste would get her eating but she said she is just not ready yet, lol.  Today Aunt Finola came in for a visit. She was very nice and gave Sky a few licks and played with her a bit. The kittens have learned how to climb up to the second level of the cat tree.

Everyone is doing well with litter box training. Raven is still holding out and not eating the baby cat kibble. He is the first to greet anyone coming to see the kittens and likes to climb up in my lap and fall asleep. This week they are teething  and working on learning how hard they can bite. This is an important stage for them to experience if they are to grow up to be gentle cats. They need to learn acceptable limits and who better then a brother who bites back to learn from. Favored teething surfaces are towel hems and clothing folds. They will keep these baby teeth until about 6 months of age.

July 14, 2007 - Last night Sky decided to try some of the baby cat kibble. From the look of her approach to it, I'm not sure if she was happy about it, lol.

This morning Cherry showed me he now possesses full knowledge of litter box use.:)

I've noticed this week that Sage is not talking loudly as much as he did as a baby. Makes me wonder if the volume was related to his hearing or sight development. He is much more self assured and along with Raven is always the first kitten to approach me when I visit. This morning I had Cherry, Sage and Raven running about and climbing on me but where was Sky...... still curled up in the cube, lol.

July 13, 2007 -  This morning Sage joined Cherry for breakfast of kibble and water. All of the kittens have been getting drinks of water from their little bowl. They all also use the litter to pee and spend their days alternating playing and sleeping. Aunty Finny finds them fascinating and has found a little corner where she can sit and watch them, peeking from behind the towel.

All of the kittens are learning that toys are great to play with. They can pounce on a string and hold it. Whenever Sky disappears I know to look for her in the cube house. It's her favorite spot. She also enjoys clawing the wood branch on the cat tree. Sage and Cherry have both had drinks from the water bowl and used the litter box to pee. Raven has had a drink too. July 9, 2007 - Today was a very good day. The kittens development has jumped by leaps and bounds, no pun intended. They are clearly ecstatic with the new freedom they have. Keva is a wonderful mom during the day. I found that if we hung large towels over two panels that form a corner in the run, behind the cat tree where her nest is, she is more relaxed. The kittens are climbing, playing,  and wrestling. Tonight  I came in to say good night, and make sure they were all settled in the cube house. Keva was eating some baby cat kibble and Sage, Sky and Cherry came over to watch her. Cherry decided he would be the first kitten to eat solid food. He started eating and kept eating. I made a movie but the light was low for bed time so its a bit dark. You can hear Keva talking to the kittens in the background. Sky and Sage watch him eat and Sage puts her foot in the water bowl. Sage then crawled into the training litter box and scratched a hole and squatted...no deposit...but he has the right idea. Not to be outdone Sky combined the two and ate from the litter box. Every time I cleaned her mouth and moved her to the food she headed right back for more litter. Raven join Sky and had a litter snack then decided to rinse it down. With all the activity I turned a  light on so the video of Raven learning to drink turned out better. The little snap/popping nose you hear when he raises his head is him clearing the water from his nose.

July 8, 2007 - This morning started with lots of kitten activity and wandering about. They now have teeth so licking and chewing is a way for them to explore different surfaces.  It was time to move to the kitten run to keep them safe for the next few weeks. They will litter box train and learn about eating baby cat kibble and drinking water from a bowl. They will also do lots of learning through play.

The kittens all loved their new home and checking out some of the new elements, but the move was difficult for Keva. She was in and out an calling most of the morning and afternoon. I sat in the run all day to help her relax when she was in and to remind her not to carry the kittens about. I also comforted the kittens when she was away. Keva really wanted to move them elsewhere. It wasn't until about 5 pm that she really settled down. She and the kittens have been resting under the cat tree for the past three hours.

Raven is 13.38 oz. (380.8 grams) up 3.5 grams

With the amount of activity that went on today and with Keva being in and out every ten minutes I not surprised that weight gains are low.

July 7, 2007 -

This evening the kittens were pretty active. They climbed a carpet covered tunnel and the practiced the "Halloween Kitty" pose. That would be back arched, tail up, and the "I'm bad and scary" face, lol.  After the Halloween Kitty pose they would burst forward for a short distance then back up and do the Halloween kitty pose again.

July 6, 2007 - Cherry was all about visiting this morning and came out and walked about and talked to us. Raven joined her a little bit  but backed to just under the edge of the bed and sat with Sage. They each have a distinctive look now.  I can tell them apart most of the time and if I am unsure I just need to look at them together to tell. Sage's face is a bit narrower then Cherry's and Sky is a bigger kitten then Raven. Finola, our seal girl from Maeve's last litter, came in to see what we were doing and she discovered these strange lil' furballs are cats, lol.  She was very keen on seeing them. If you have had more then one cat then you will recognize the move she was trying to use. She got along side of Cherry and gently put her arm (paw) around her and was nuzzling. Finola was going to go in for a dominate nuggie nip but I stopped her. Finola wanted so bad to play with Cherry she kept sneaking under the bed to see her.

Right to left and front to back are: Cherry, Raven, Sage and Sky.

On the far right of this photo is Mom Keva. Pawing out from under the night stand is Finola. She has her paw on Cherry's paw and Raven is looking at it. Behind Raven's tail end is Sage.

Afternoon weigh in......

Sky is 14.4 oz. (409 grams) up 7.1 grams

Sage is 15.9 oz. (452 grams) up 10.7 grams

Cherry is 1 lb. .5oz. (469.8 grams) up 14.2 grams

Raven is 13 oz. (370 grams) up 10.7 grams

When we brought the kittens out to weigh them I decided that instead of returning each one back to the nest we would place them on the carpet in front of us. After weighing, Cherry was being the usual social explorer and Sage headed back to safety under the edge of the bed. Sky was just behind and looking at Sage. Sage bit on Sky's right ear and started pulling her under. It was too cute and by the time I grabbed the camera the moment was over. They all crawled under and back into the nest and are sleeping.

July 5, 2007 -Today was a quiet day of resting for all the kitten. just before bedtime Cherry, Raven and Sage came out for a little visit. Sky stayed in the nest. Maybe they were recovering from yesterdays activity.

Afternoon weigh in......

Sky is 14.1 oz. (402 grams) up 17.8 grams

Sage is 15.5 oz. (441 grams) up 7.1 grams

Cherry is 1 lb. 0oz. (455.5 grams) up 10.7 grams

Raven is 12.6 oz. (359 grams) up 10.7 grams

July 4, 2007 - Happy Independence Day

The kittens are using this day to exercise a little independence. They are crawling all over under the bed. We expanded the room they have available and like any good kittens they are finding all the nooks and cranies we thought weren't there. They have gotten very good at walking and no longer drag their bellies.

Afternoon weigh in......

Sky is 13.5 oz. (384 grams) up 7.1 grams

Sage is 15.25 oz. (434 grams) up 21 grams

Cherry is 15.6 oz. (445 grams) up 10.7 grams

Raven is 12.2 oz. (349 grams) up 10.7 grams

July 3, 2007 - three weeks old

I've been working on getting some nice birthday photos. Raven is the star who posed just right for me. Cherry looks a bit bored with the whole process. I failed with Sky. She looks terrible in her photo. She has a bigger build, huge paws and a large head but in the photo she is way more puffy looking then she really is because she is trying to back her head out of my fingers. Sage's first photo looked so angelic I wanted to use it but it really does not reflect the personality, so I also added the one talking. Anytime I take Sage from the nest it's s like a burglar alarm goes off. Maybe this kitten is saying " Mom somebody's stealing me" or maybe Sage is just happy to have someone to talk to. For the most part I avoided red eye :) Their eyes are a very dark blue now. They will still continue to develop their final color as they mature.

Sweet Lil Raven. I think Raven will be a cat who poses beautifully.

July 2, 2007 - Tonight we brought the kittens out on the bed for a short romp. We started with the kittens with the smallest voices, Cherry and Sky. Keva did well. She was a little nervous but we had her favorite toy so she was distracted. Then we added Raven and finally Sage "the voice". Sage has a way of talking very loud and it always alarms Keva. We had to keep Keva from grabbing Sage by the scruff and whisking her back to the nest. She was only out for about a minute before they all went back to the nest. We wanted this to be a low stress experience for Keva. I did take a few photos. That is Keva without a collar and Finola with the blue collar.

June 28, 2007 - Keva decided to move the kittens again this morning. I think she is afraid of them leaving the box. She really wants them under the bed. We tried multiple solutions again. I know some breeders use cages for all litters until the kittens are weaned and litter trained but I don't like the idea of caging them as long as they are not in any danger. I gave in and covered the cords and placed a nest in the area she wants to be in. We used plastic under-bed boxes to block off all other areas. I am hoping that by allowing her to do it her way Keva will relax. It does make it even harder to photograph and observe. When I see Keva napping away from them I quietly lift the bed skirt and stroke the kittens. They all enjoy having their heads and chins stroked. They hold their little heads up and look up in anticipation.

Afternoon weigh in......

Sky is 11.4 oz. (324 grams) up 21 grams

Sage is 12.1 oz. (345 grams) up 21 grams

Cherry is 12.5 oz. (356 grams) up 10.7 grams

Raven is 10 oz. (285 grams) up 10.7 grams

June 27, 2007 - We have allowed Keva to have total peace and quiet today. She was content with the new box. This evening the kittens were more then ready for visiting. When I was talking to Keva the kittens kept trying to crawl out of the box. They have gotten stronger and are ready to practice walking a bit.

Afternoon weigh in......

Sky is 10.6 oz. (202.5 grams) up 17.8 grams

Kittens should triple their birth weight by two weeks.

Sky's overall gains are 284.700. (284.700 ๗ 3 = 94.9) Her birth weight was 85.410. 9.49 grams over the goal.

Sage's overall gains are 313.170. (313.170 ๗ 3 = 104.39) His birth weight was 99.645. 4.745 grams over the goal.

Cherry's overall gains are 320.288. (320.288 ๗ 3 = 106.76) Her birth weight was 92.528. 14.25 grams over the goal.

Raven's overall gains are 263.348. (263.348 ๗ 3 = 87.78) Her birth weight was 78.293. 9.489 grams over the goal

Keva decided during the night that it was moving day. She moved all the kittens under our bed. We tried many times to relocate them to a more appropriate place (in our opinion) but Keva was single minded. It was a battle of wills and with Keva's instincts telling her she had to move them or they would be in danger.......from coyotes? Each time one of the kittens would talk Keva would panic. I don't feel under our bed is the safest place. We have a sleep number bed and it has electric cords that run under it. We gave up and began thinking of options that would feel like the space under the bed. We now have a large nest  inside a closed Tivo box. A small door cut into the end. The box is next to my nightstand. Keva has settled down for now and is nursing the kittens.

New nest box home

I was able to take the photos below  before the kittens went into their new box.

I also made a video clip to show how strong they are getting and how they move about.

You can hear the kittens talk and Keva respond to them.

I want out too.

Hey! You got out ahead of me.

Whoops, mom moved.

Here I go.

There's nowhere to go.

Do I have to come in?

Nap time..........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Two of the first inquiries I get are about point color and sex. As you can see from the photos point color takes some time. Seals show their color first followed by  their dilute blue, and then chocolates. Because lilac is the dilute of chocolate, and chocolate color comes in slower,  it's sometimes difficult to say which will be chocolate and which would be lilac until much later. We can tell now that we have two kittens in  seal/blue and two in chocolate/lilac. Time will tell if we have dilutes.
Sex can be determined by comparison. The difference has been described  as a colon ( : ) for males versus an upside down exclamation point ( ก ) for females.  In newborn kittens the scrotal raphe can sometimes throw me off. Once the testis start to develop it becomes more obvious. I have decided what I think. I wouldn't be surprised if the kittens prove me wrong as they develop, lol. Now is your turn. If you put your curser on each photo it will show you my choice of sex. This mouse over function does not work with all browsers.

June 20, 2007 - Keva is making it difficult to get good nest photo's of the kittens. She wants them to be inside the the pyramid bed only.  They loudly meow anytime they are handled and she is very protective (worried) when she hears them meowing. I went out to get a new enclosed bed so I could wash the pyramid. Keva went in the new house but will not allow the kittens to be put in it. I also bought some new lamb (nest) fabric that I cut into liners that I can remove and wash. I wish I had better photos for you. Keva allowed me to pose one baby at a time, except Sage, for photos. She grabbed Sage right away by the scruff and pulled the kitten back into the pyramid. They all are getting big round bellies and are becoming handfuls.

June 18, 2007 - six days old

Sage's eyes are beginning to open. Sky's eyes are starting to peek open also. Siamese kittens eyes look red at first because they are not fully developed. As the eye develops we will begin to see definition of the pupil followed by the blue we know and love. The lighter color at the inner corners is the haw (inner eyelid) sometimes referred to as the third eyelid.

The kittens are eating and sleeping, eating and sleeping, and eating and sleeping some more. :) Raven has gone from having a lightly shaded nose this morning to a darkened nose leather at the end of the day. Sage and Cherry both shed their umbilical cords today. We found all the kittens under the pad insert (floor) of the pyramid this afternoon. We rearranged the kittens so they were again sleeping on a soft bed, on top the floor pad.

June 15, 2007 - three days old

The kittens have been very active "belly crawling" about, exercising to become stronger. All their activity made Keva nervous. She decided today was the day for a new smaller home. One with a small opening so she could keep an eye on all the kittens. She moved them into the pyramid house. Sometimes a queen will relocate kittens when she feels the nest is not as clean as she would like. I changed out all the bedding and the nest with freshly washed ones but she still wants the babies in the pyramid. It makes it harder for me to observe them and to see how well everyone is nursing. Today's weigh-in shows good weight gains so I'm not worried.

June 14, 2007 - two days old

Keva has learned to be a wonderful Momma. She only goes for walks when the kittens are all full and contentedly sleeping. The kittens are active and filling out. Even with their eyes closed kittens choose and suckle a favorite nipple. Right now they have decided on three favorites. Sky and Sage were fussing up a storm this morning. Sage was latched on and Sky was loudly proclaiming she wanted the same nipple and was trying to push into position. Sage's little paws were flailing in defense. I tried to position Sky on an unused nipple but she refused all of them and kept heading back to the favorite. Once Cherry was sleeping I was able to get Sage to switch nipples and allow Sky some suckle time.

We are beginning to see some darkening in the edge of Sky's ears. You can see it a little in the photo above.

Her nose is also starting to show a little shading. I'll try to get some good photos today of her coloring.

Keva is doing much better with her duties. She still wants to leave the kitten room to check on the adult girls but she is settling in and showing that she is a concerned and nurturing momma.

June 12, 2007 - 2:00 pm - I found Keva under my bed panting and purring. Discharge on her fur indicated her cervix is dilating.  I removed her to the kitten room and placed her in her birthing box. The room temperature is kept at 80 degrees. Visible contractions began around 2:30pm. Keva is very vocal when in labor. The first kitten was born tail first at 2:53 pm. It was marked under the armpit and on the behind with blue. Siamese kittens are born all white. I mark them with non toxic color so I can keep track of how they are doing. I will weigh them each day to be sure they are getting enough milk from Keva. The mark on the behind is so I can tell who is who when observing and if I need to handle one specific kitten I can do it without bothering all the kittens. The under arm mark is for back up identification. Momma cats clean their kitten all the time and can lick the back mark off. The underarm is not cleaned as often so the color remains longer. Kitten two was born in diving position at 3:16 pm. This kitten was marked with green. Kitten three was born at 3:30pm. The back right foot was wrapped in the birth sack so that the toes were curled under. It appears they were like this for some time as they do not go into the natural flat position. I put my finger under the toes and I can feel the kitten flex and grip my finger. The foot and toes seem to be functioning normally. I think they will straighten out now that they are free from the birth sack.

As a new mother Keva has shown me she has much to learn. It was necessary for me to remove the sack from each kitten's face and wipe their face to get them breathing. She seemed to be overwhelmed with all that she was going through. I helped her rub the kittens to stimulate blood flow and warmed them.

There are no more contractions. She is working on cleaning and snuggling the kittens. One of us stays in the kitten room at all times for the first 24 hours. Nest check at 8:00pm all is well. During the next hour all is quiet except for the little squeaks from the kittens as they fuss. Kitten four was found around 9 pm when Keva became distressed and left the nest. There was no sack or placenta and the kitten had not been cleaned. It was cold and not alive. From this point on I sit at the front of the nest and monitor Keva for contractions.  At 9:40 Keva became vocal again. After a few contractions kitten five was born at 10:00 pm. I assisted with this kitten and suctioned it's mouth and rubbed it's fur to stimulate it.

Keva would not settle down in the nest for the night unless I stayed with her and comforted her. I stayed up all night with her.

I caught myself using he and she when writing this entry. I need to state up front, if I mess up and use sex based tags in my narrative it is not an indicator of the individual kittens sex and I am sorry. I try not to guess the sex and wait until I can tell without a doubt. The difference in males and females is measured in millimeters.  Many breeders have made mistakes guessing too early, including me :) With that said, When I am certain of each kittens sex I will make an announcement as part of the diary.

June 5, 2007 - We can feel little bumps and movement from the kittens when we place our hands on Keva's sides.

May 20, 2007 - Keva is beginning to look round.

Keva's litter is expected to arrive in mid June.
