August 27th - Genoise went home yesterday. First reports back are he is doing very well. He's enjoying playing and sofa sitting with his boys. Momma Grainne is missing chasing through the house after her sneak attack boys.

Genoise playing before he was pick up by his forever family.

August 19th -  Peaches family picked him up this morning. We couldn't have asked for a nicer visit. He crawled right into his new owners lap and was very happy to love on him and be loved on. I think we will bond very well with his boy, and the rest of the family :) too.

Momma Grainne and her boys this morning

Genoise will be staying with us until Aug 26th because his family is on a vacation.

Yesterday our eldest son and daughter visited with the kittens

Grandma Fenya got to spend time with her grandson's too.

Treats a shared love, lol

August 15-17 - twelve weeks old - The kitten's went in for their alter surgery on their birthdays. They are did very well and came home very well behaved. They rested Wednesday night and were back to their normal activity, minus jumping, the next day. Creme Pat has done so well post surgery I agree to allow her to go home today, Friday. Her meowmy has a four day weekend and wants the time to bond with her. All three kittens were crawling on everyone's laps and into Creme Pats carrier. It was a very nice good bye for Creme Pat. She was not stressed at all.

Home from the hospital and my laps too small.

Peaches on my lap before everyone else piled on top of him.

Right after they arrived home from surgery.

Dr. Gould did a wonderful job on Creme Pat. I can hardly tell where her tiny incision is.

Creme Pat sitting with me waiting for her family to arrive.

August 8 -10 -eleven weeks old - The kittens were supposed to have their surgery but it had to be rescheduled. to next Wednesday. We've been playing instead. I'm convinced these two boys make each other bitey. They seem to give each other permission by biting each other in play. I can tell how they look at me when I correct them that they understand not to bite but they rile each other up and forget. Peaches is learning to substitute licking for his soft bites. This is exactly what his grandmother Fenya did. She was very oral as a kitten and learned licking was acceptable. As an adult she no longer uses her mouth like she did when she was young. Once in a while she will groom me or if I'm doing something to her that's annoying her she will lick me as a warning to stop, lol.

I've realized with Creme Pat the best way to get one on one attention from her is to ignore her. She can't resist inserting herself into what I'm going. She will want to be on my lap.

Genoise is such a snuggle buddy. He just loves everyone. He believes the best place is right between your feet when your standing. He will even sit on your foot, lol.

August 5 - This weekend we worked on proper curtain manners. Yes you can play behind the curtains. No you cannot claw or climb the curtains. They were really good and learned very quickly.

O-kay the plant may be a problem. I think it just said it wants to go outside for a little vacation, lol.

Peaches likes sitting on the plant stand

Creme Pat prefers to stand on it.

Looking for anything else to do, lol

August 1- ten weeks old - Genoise has become more relaxed and no longer feels he has to prove his dominance all the time. Peaches on the other hand has ramped up his level taking every bit his brother relinquishes to him. I've been introducing them to treats. Genoise caught on right away, It took Creme Pat a little while to understand that Treat mean come with me, lol  Peaches seems indifferent to them. Now when I call treat and tell them to go to the treat bench they do come but were working on the bench part. Genoise love treats so much he hops at me like an excited puppy, lol. Momma already knows Treat desk and treat bench so she is helping them to learn. Next will be trying to get them to be not so excited so thy can gently take a treat and not try to steal everyone elses. Creme Pat is getting good at jumping and catching the bird. I was surprised to see her jump and catch it in her mouth like great great grandma Maeve used to do. Grannia and Fen have always grabbed it with hteir paws and stuffed it into their mouth. The kittens got to play with Peaches  family this week. The boys enjoyed being rascals and Creme Pat was quite taken with the Mother. Creme Pat has also become a bit of a Mini Me to Momma Grainne. She shadows her at her side exactly.

July 25th - nine weeks old - Oh my we have been busy with the hard work of playing and visiting with families. The kittens adored having  Genoise's family stop by. Nothing better than playing hard with two boys. I expected for Genoise to lead the way and was surprised when Peaches was the one running to the boys first. He loved every minute of the attention.

I'm seeing a big of roll reversal this week. Genoise seems to be settling down a bit, he was a bit of a bully. Peaches actually had a scab on his scruff from Genoise. He's become much nicer with much less surprise attacking play.  Peaches is now amping up his beast mode, lol. He's taking a liking to attacking Grandma Fenya's plush toy raccoon. I'm working with Creme Pat to get her less focused on the details of everything go on around her. She is coming around nicely. In the past few days she has taken to  calling me and running to me when she can't find her brothers. They like to run off upstairs.

We are seeing much more vertical play both in climbing and in jumping after toys. I found Genoise on the top of the cat tree but couldn't get a photo of him fast enough. They are also learning the word treat. Its the easiest way to wrangle them all when they are all over the house, lol.  When downloading my camera I discover I had a number of Creme pat photos but not to many of anyone else. I make up for this this weekend and get some better photos of everyone, I hope, lol. They like to move fast.

July 19th - The kittens got to go for a ride in the car today, without Momma, to see the Vet for their first wellness check up. They all traveled quietly. They got to help a Veterinary student who was visiting learn about kitten exams. They were double checked by the Student and the doctor. They passed all the checks with flying colors. Of the three Peaches heart was racing the fastest He was Mr. Friendly and excited to be there so it must have been his excitement.  Genoise was doing the cool dude thing, lol, but I really don't think he thought it was cool to be there. His paws were wet with sweat. Miss Creme Pat was buzzing, visibly. Her heart rate was fast too but I think hers was from her nerves. They each got their vaccination shot and were good to go.

I held Creme Pat on my lap while we waited for the Vet.

" Do I have to be here?"

Mr. Peaches was  banging his face into the grate trying to get it open.

So I put Miss Creme Pat into the carrier with Genoise.

And put Peaches on my lap. He was thrilled

He was making biscuits and purring hard.

And loving all the petting. He loves to be touched, he responds to touch.

" Oh, Here she comes!"

July 18th - eight weeks old  - The thought process was, Ill go in and catch some nice photos of the kittens as they wake up. They will be more likely to sit for a bit. The joke was on me. They heard me walking and as soon as I entered the room they were down around my feet saying hello  and sprinted out of the room to run and play. Okay, recalculating lol. I will take one at a time and set them on the desk nests for a photo shoot. Genoise was at my feet so he went first. Well this went well. He was a good boy and I got a few nice photo poses. I thought, no problem. Hahaha I hadn't thought through what was happening while Genoise was being good. The other two were off playing. I set Genoise down and he ran off. I enticed Peaches. He was pretty good I got a few nice photos of him too. Peaches knew he was missing out and could hear the other two dashing about, toys squeaking. He kept looking and wanting to leave. At this point I allowed him to run off and I stalked miss Creme Pat, basically tricked her with a toy and placed her on the desk. Two photos and she was gone. I hadn't accounted for each successive kitten to be more wound up from playing. So poor Miss Creme Pat has not so many and not so good  photos. Ill have to get her first next time, lol.

Peaches

Peaches was so sweet yesterday he melted my heart.

Normally they all nap together but yesterday he crawled up into my lap and onto my chest to sleep. No camera close to me of course.

No he's not looking at me, he's trying to look out into the hall to see what he's missing out on.

Creme Pat

Creme Pat has a hard time getting her turn to play with her brothers always taking the lead.

But she makes up for it with speed and quick direction changes. She can out run these boys chasing the toy.

Genoise is the bully, err I mean dominate kitten in the litter. He likes to get his way.

There is a strong will in this boy. Good thing he is a good boy, lol.

Of the three kittens I think Creme Pat will be the one to change the most once she leaves us.

She needs the freedom from her brother to come into her own

July 11th - seven weeks old - The kittens are in the chasseing speed demon phase. They are driving Momma's nerves to ruin, lol. Poor momma Grainne. It's her turn to adjust.

bi-weekly weigh in ........

Peaches  is 2 lb. 1 ounce = 939 grams - up 71 grams

Genoise is 2 lb.  2 ounces = 968 grams - up 71 grams

Creme Pat is 1 lb. 12 ounces = 797 grams - up 64 grams

Their weights are right on track with the weights of Grainne's past litters. We stop weighing at seven weeks when the boys hit two pounds. Both of these boy made that mark. Creme Pat has a little to go but girls are almost always smaller than the boys and she will get there weeks before her surgery date. Early S&N requires 2 pound or 8 weeks of age. They will surpass that requirement way ahead of time.

July 4th - Happy Independence Day - six weeks old - We have removed the run fencing. Some photos were taken just before we removed it. We will be working on building confidence for whole house activity. Over the past few days we have spent time coming into the living room and basically sleeping behind the sofa. As they become more comfortable they will emerge more to play. Our goal for this coming week is to see them all playing out in the room. Creme Pat is the first to develop self awareness. She is very tuned into everything going on. The boys are still a bit oblivious. Self awareness in the big world at this age equals fear. They all go thought this phase. some more acutely than others. As they gain positive experiences they grow more secure with their place in the world. They learn the difference between what should be feared and what are normal everyday noises and movements.

June28th - Some better photos of Creme Pat with a couple of Peaches too.

In the range of nose shapes (not muzzle but actual nose leather) Keva has a more arched, rounded nose, Fenya has a flat wide nose. Grainne falls right between the two. Creme Pat's nose is looking more like Keva's.  It's more of an arched rounded shape. It's a sleek, delicate looking nose.

June27th five weeks old - Over the past few days the kittens have been exploring...

Up the cat tree

Out into the house ....Noo one was timid about going out.

Oh my all these new smells they don't know....

Momma's fussing meows didn't help

Creme Pat lost her nerve first and ran back to her safe room.

Genoise wanted to go further.

But momma's fussing got louder and Peaches high tailed it back to the room too.

Gemoise headed back but more in a "I'm still checking things out I'm not done yet" sort of way.

He really, really wanted to go up. But he's too small and just couldn't get up.

Genoise kept trying even though he fell back on his rear each time.

I convinced him maybe he should try next week when he's a bit bigger.

I had a really hard time getting nice face photos for their birthday. They just wanted to play not pose for me.

June 23-24th - I witnessed Peaches properly using the litter box. I'm sure Creme Pat is also. We have had no accidents at all. So I expanded the run area to three quarters of the room. I saved the last quarter in front of the door so I can safely enter and exit without being rushed by tiny escape artists, lol. We introduced a moving toy. The kittens have set up an observation panel to study this phenomena. They are trying to determine if it is safe or not. If it gets to close too quickly they don't hesitate to hiss a warning at it. Momma wants to eat its feathers, lol. The kittens are starting to drink from the big bowl. They have also successfully figured out how to climb up to the first level perch on the cat tree. Momma has decided she doesn't like the big family nest. Apparently 4 in a one cat nest is not too crowded for her.

This is what I saw when I can in to see them this morning, lol

Of course as soon as they heard the door they all woke up.

Creme Pat, drinking out of the big bowl

Peaches, Momma has nipped off all his whiskers cleaning his face.

He is such a sweet and gentle boy. While the other kittens still like to bite/mouth my fingers, Peaches licks me.

He also enjoys sitting on my lap with his paws on my arm.

These photos were taking in low light with my phone. I'm sorry they are awful quality.

Genoise in the hole and Peaches on my arm....falling asleep, lol.

Both Peaches and Creme Pat learned right away, very fast, not to bite hard. They are both very gentle. I think this led to Genoise needing special instruction. He still bites a little bit too hard. They needed to bite him back to teach him to be gentle. So we are working on teaching him appropriate use of those teeth, lol. When I tell him "no lbite" he's does understand and is more restrained.

I'm not sure who this is. It could be Creme Pat or Genoise.

Teething toys make good bit surfaces instead of fingers, lol

Watching that moving toy carefully. Is it safe or not?

Nap time, I had to get this photo through the glass on the French doors so I wouldn't wake them.

Please may I come up on your lap? Note only whiskers on the right side, lol, left side nipped clean.

Summer sun, breeze from an open window, Ahhh

At the end of a long day of playing and new challenges, we still need momma.

June 20thfour weeks old - The kittens are doing great. They are very active, goofy, and sweet. They are developing skills through play. I watched Peaches walk along the top edge of the big litter box today. I also witnessed that Genoise has master the use of the litter box. He left both a wet spot and a deposit at different times today. There have been no accidents so the transition to litter box use is going very well. As of today we will begin weighing bi-weekly. Once the kittens move to kibble weights very too much for daily weigh ins.

Genoise

Genoise' head is maturing. He's losing the baby roundness a bit.

Genoise needs to work a little bit on pressure compared to the other two but he responded and looked at me intently when I indicated it was a little bit too hard....it wasn't really hard at all but he could be gentler so I want him to learn.

June 15th - I decided this morning to bring in a small bowl of baby cat kibble. I was so shocked to see them all run to it  and begin eating it at the same time. This never happens. I wasn't even prepared with a camera, and it was so cute, darn. I ran and got my camera but had to sprinkle food on the rug to get eating photos. They are also still nursing. I need to get the room all set up with a training litter box too. They are exploring all over the room now. No longer tentative about leaving home base.

June 13th - three weeks old - On one end of the spectrum is creme Pat. She is a busy little sprite. She was first into my lap and very active.  On the other end is Genoise. He is more of a thinker. He is also social but just not a busy bee....yet. Watching his wrestle I think he may end up being the leader in this litter. Peaches falls into the middle between them. He likes to be busy with Creme Pat but can also sit and study things with Genoise, until Genoise attacks him for a wrestle, lol. All the kittens are social and curious with us.

June 9th - We opened up the cabinet doors and placed the run fence so that the kittens can start exploring. Creme Pat and Peaches have been showing a lot of interest in wanting to learn about what's beyond the nest edge. We will start out with a smaller area and expand it as they, and momma,  get more comfortable.

Back row left to right is Creme Pat and Peaches. Across the front is Genoise.

I tried all morning to get a video of the kittens first leaving the nest to explore. Right when I quit and turned away both Peaches and Creme Pat crawled right out, lol.

Playing and biting on each other.....teething?

I noticed that Creme Pat keeps going to the back of the nest to the towel behind it....

After bringing her forward I'm pretty sure she is self soothing her gums on the terry cloth nubs.

She does it to all the terry cloth. I rubbed my little finger in her mouth and she has little bumps of teeth under her gums.

Considering if I should supplement Creme Pat with some kitten milk to help her fatten up a bit. She's gaining okay but feels thinner by comparison.

June 5th - They have now taken to enjoying a roll on their backs and waving their feet in the air, lol. I take it as an invitation to rub their tummies. I'll get good photos tomorrow for their two week birthday.

This video is of Creme Pat visiting with me. The rapid ticking you hear is Genoise purring as he nurses. Peaches is also nursing you can see his back leg if you look closely, lol

Creme Pat better stop day dreaming and start eating again.  Genoise is all about eating all the time.

June 1st -  This month started by scaring me out of my wits. Grainne was waiting for me at the door. I set down her wet food. I've been giving her some each day. I lifted the towel that covers the nesting box to see this.

Oh No, They were not under the beds, not in the box at all. I checked each possible place and no kittens. I scoured the room and started to panic. Momma where did you hide them?

The only place left was behind the old computer brain. Its no longer used but I've kept it in place to fill the cubby so kittens don't go in there. I pilled the brain forward. Sure enough. Momma had a bed back there. Amazing she carried each one up over the case to put it back in there. My guess is they had crawled out of the nesting box and she didn't think it was safe anymore. I moved them.

They are now in the corner cabinet nesting area with a box of food blocking the opening, lol Babies can't crawl over the box but momma can hop it.

The bed in front is just in case it goes wrong again. lol

I left the case pulled out of the cubby and all opened up. I'll go back later after she has time to be quite and settled and clean it out  and figure out what to do with it.

Creme Pat one week old

Her nose leather coloring up so much like the others has me questioning if she is chocolate or not.

Her coat definitely has the whiter color of a chocolate. Time will tell. Maybe she will have deep chocolate points or

maybe she will have a really light seal body, lol

evening weigh in......

Peaches  is 7.0  ounces = 199 grams - up 7.1  grams

Genoise is  7.25 ounces = 206 grams - up 7.1 grams

Creme Pat is 6.4 ounces = 181 grams - up 10.7 grams

I need to make sure that sleeping outside the nest is not interfering with their nursing. I hope we see big gains tomorrow to compensate for the smaller ones today. They are right on track for weigh. They have basically doubled their birth weight in the first week.

Left to right - Peaches, Genoise, and Creme Pat.

May 29th- day six - Putting the new bed in made no difference. They were all up on the bolsters on different sides until Momma meowed at me. Then Peaches decided he needed to eat and crawled down. Their noses are looking dark tonight.....even Creme Pat's. I'll get some good birthday photos tomorrow for comparison.

May 26th- day three - All is well this morning. Momma is hungry and eating. A good sign. I see some eyes peeping open.

If you want to give a go at guessing the kittens sexes here are some photos taken today. I'll add my guess tonight when I add the weights. Momma didn't want me to pick up Peaches so that's her paw at the bottom holding firm.

I think Peaches and Genoise are seal point boys and Creme Pat is a chocolate point girl Time will tell if I am correct or not.

May 25th -  day two - I'm going to start today with good news. All three kittens and momma are fussy and hungry this morning.

Now I have some bad news I've beat myself up this morning really well. There was another kitten. I found it delivered and cleaned but cold and unresponsive this morning. The staining on the towels indicated it was relatively recent delivery, still red. Wednesday night when the kittens were born, I thought I felt another kitten. I was uncertain because her last litter I thought the same thing. We took her for an x-ray and there was nothing. This time I allowed myself to be convinced I was wrong...again. With hindsight we should have gone and had her x-rayed to see what I was feeling. She could have been given oxytosin to induce contractions. I've added # 5 to the birth day post stats. I'm happy she delivered it...now we wait and watch. We watch momma to make sure she not developing an infection and watch weights to make sure the kittens are eating and strong. Not sick from bad milk.

I'm already worried about how fussy they are. They are very hungry. I'm anxious to see tonight's weights.

Now for some cute photos. There's a little bit of color coming into Peaches and Genoise nose leather.

evening weigh in......

Peaches  is 4.6 ounces = 131 grams - up  10.7  grams

Genoise is  4.6 ounces = 131 grams - up 7.1 grams

Creme Pat is 4.25 ounces = 121 grams - up 14.2 grams

Acceptable weight gains for early on with the lions share going to the smaller kittens is good.

May 24th - day one - All is well. A quick glance this morning makes me think we have one chocolate and two seals. In this photo Left to right is Genoise, Peaches and Creme Pat.  Pat looks lighter. That's usually an indicator of a chocolate point.

Since they were born late I will do weigh ins after dinner in the evening. We always weigh the kittens each day because you can see signs of trouble in their weights sooner then waiting to observe trouble through behaviors. Lack of mothers milk can be supported with a professionally formulated milk replacer if needed. These kittens are strong nursers they should have a good supply of milk with their strong demand calling for production.

Strong nursers

May 23, 2018 - Birthday - Grainne lounged on me for two hours getting belly rubs until about 10:15 when she started telling me it was time. We then went to her birthing box. Her contractions were barely visible but she called out with each one. A bubble of fluid appeared at 10:32 pm. The first kitten delivered easily head first at 10:43 pm. Kitten 2 delivered head first easily at  11:00 pm . Then we waited about an hour for number three to appear. A head first easy delivery too. Grainne needed no help from me. I just offered petting for comfort.  We had longer waits for the placentas but we confirmed all were expelled. We allowed Grainne to eat all three for the rich vitamins and minerals each contains.

It was another hour before I thought I saw a paw or tail but it turned out to be the head of an underdeveloped fetus. It was about  one inch in length, at about 4 weeks the  development arrested. This is the time when they go from being an embryo to a fetus. There must have been a critical error in  the developmental process. We are very grateful this caused no problems for Grainne and the healthy kittens.  The kittens were all strong and active as soon as they were born. #2 and #3 both nursed while still on their umbilical cords. Momma waiting for the  attached placentas to it to deliver.  I only assisted with the fetus delivery because it was too small and contractions had stopped. I also took away the placenta so she wouldn't eat it. Just in case it might make her sick. All is good.

The Stats at birth

#1 10:43pm  orange –  Peaches – 103 grams (3.625 ounces)

#2 11:00 pm  blue Genoise  110  grams (3.875 ounces)

#3 11.55 pm  white  Creme Pat 92.5 grams (3.25 ounces) initially marked red but we will not continue to mark.

#4 12:55 am  none  Fetus  about 1 inch long, arrested development ,with placenta

#5 delivered on 5-25 early am still born more than 24 hours after the initial births. Photo link for those who are interested.

Diary naming scheme - I've been watching videos of the old British Bake offs. The kittens are a delicious seasonal treat.  If you've never heard of Genoise, this is how to pronounce it, lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi9fdVxo5xU

Mary Berry has a Fraiser cake recipe that uses Genoise, Creme Patissiere and summer Strawberries....but we think Peaches makes a cuter name, lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnjTCBX3MzI With the spring weather it should be an excellent peach season this summer. :)

Newborns latched on nursing - left to right Creme Pat, Genoise, and Peaches.

Tummy rubs while waiting for labor to begin

May 15th -Not only can we feel the kittens moving but we can now see them moving too.

March 17, 2018 - We are breeding Grainne to Polo this weekend.
